Waltz Into Spring

The sun is shining and spring has arrived for many in the Northern Hemisphere.  A Strauss waltz and a coloratura soprano seem like a delightful way to honor the season.

The Cowboy has had a soft spot in his heart for coloratura soprani since first seeing the Queen of the Night as a young teen.

Natalie Dessay is an absolutely lovely example.  She was particularly fetching in her debut at the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera) performing the Frühlingsstimmenwaltz.

Like the Cowboy, Dessay has a fondness for the high desert.  If you find yourself in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, you might look for her.

As for Johann the Younger, his father wanted him to be a banker.  He beat little Johann upon catching him with a violin.  When his father left the boy and his mother, things improved for young Johann.  His mother, Maria Anna, encouraged him, and the world received his Songs of Spring.

The Cowboy attended a black tie affair over the weekend as the guest of a very kind friend.  Like Dessay, her charming and friendly exterior belies an energy, technical mastery and command of her stage that is impressive, but appears effortless.

In addition to honoring spring, the Cowboy tips his hat to Dessay, Maria Anna and his impressive weekend host.  Thank you Susan.
