What do you wake up to in the morning?

The sun rises across the high desert chaparral.  The sky, indigo, the mountains glowing their infinite hues of red and orange.

You’ve seen it before.  You’ve seen it all before.  So do you wake up with jaded, cynical eyes?  Does the world weigh you down?  Do the boredom, the sadness, the hopelessness conspire with the seemingly inescapable force of gravity to keep you pressed down to the ground while the pebbles, the stones, the detritus of millions of years of geologic time press up against you uncomfortably, unpleasantly, painfully?  Do you wake to find yourself between rocks and a hard place?

The sun rises across the high desert chaparral.  The sky, indigo, the mountains glowing their infinite hues of red and orange.

A white-winged dove calls in the distance.

What do you wake up to in the morning?

It is a new day.  It is a fresh start.  It is another beautiful day.  It is a gift.  You are on a mission.

And it is that sense of mission that helps you realize that the sky represents the limitless possibilities of humanity.  The rocks and mountains are the tremendous foundation that god and man and time and energy have bestowed upon you – a bed on which to rest when you are weary and, when you wake, a foundation to support your every step, the steps of a person on a mission, steps that become more hurried, strides that become longer.  Soon you find that you are jogging.  Your pace increases.  You are running, running, faster, as fast as you can go.  The wind in your face, a smile across your face, your eyes lit as if by starlight.  You are running under that indigo sky, the sun rising, your skin, your body, your soul glowing with the mountains.  The earth and history pressing upward against your feet, helping you run, long strides, as fast as you can, like the jackrabbit across the desert.

The sun rises across the high desert chaparral.  The sky, indigo, the mountains glowing their infinite hues of red and orange.

What do you wake up to in the morning?

What is your mission?

For the Cowboy, much of it centers on friendship, collaboration, and inspiration.

A Você, Com Amor

O amor é o murmúrio da terra
quando as estrelas se apagam
e os ventos da aurora vagam
no nascimento do dia…
O ridente abandono,
a rútila alegria
dos lábios, da fonte
e da onda que arremete
do mar…

O amor é a memória
que o tempo não mata,
a canção bem-amada
feliz e absurda…

E a música inaudível…

O silêncio que treme
e parece ocupar
o coração que freme
quando a melodia
do canto de um pássaro
parece ficar…

O amor é Deus em plenitude
a infinita medida
das dádivas que vêm
com o sol e com a chuva
seja na montanha
seja na planura
a chuva que corre
e o tesouro armazenado
no fim do arco-íris.

– Vinicius de Moraes

For You, With Love

Love is the Earth’s whisper
after the stars fade
and the winds of dawn blow
the birth of the day…
The sincere laugh,
the shiny joy
of the lips, the sources
and the wave that balances
the sea…

Love is the memory
that time can not kill,
the well-loved song
happy and absurd…

It is the unheard music…

The silence that shakes
and seems to fill
a shivering heart
when the melody
of a bird song
wants to remain within…

Love is God in fullness,
the infinite extent
of  the gifts that come
with the sun and the rain,
whether in the mountains,
whether in the fields;
it is the rain that falls
and the treasure stored
at the end of the rainbow.

– Vinicius de Moraes
