Choose To Think

There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes “What the hell is water?”

Reading DFW so often feels like seeing the voice inside my head [insert standard self-deprecatory language here about modesty and not deigning to compare oneself to a modern literary great].

The Cowboy has written about him here.

How Do You Think?

This poem has been a favorite of the Cowboy since he was 14.  It spoke to him, his strengths and his desires – all in a tidy, slightly silly package.

“Think as I think,” said a man,
“Or you are abominably wicked;
You are a toad.”
And after I had thought of it,
I said, “I will then, be a toad.

Stephen Crane (1871-1900)
